Consider possible differences between management and leadership. Can a good manager make a good leader?

Management are not the same as leadership. Leadership encompasses management skills. So, a good manager is not necessarily a good leader either. There are many differences between management and leadership.

First, the definition of management and leadership is different. Management is a process by which the organization's goals are achieved and lead to results and efficiency through planning, organizing, directing, and controlling the resources of various organizations. The leadership is the use of organizational and personal influence to motivate staff and mobilize the enthusiasm of staff in order to achieve organizational goals. Therefore, management and leadership are different.

Second, the realization of the influence of the leadership does not depend on legal power, while the implementation of management must be based on the legal rights as a precondition and guarantee. As far as the leaders in the organization are concerned, people may listen to those who have powers, but it is not necessary that those who have the right have the leadership, nor do they have the implementation and leadership. Without statutory authority, managers will inevitably be unable to manage. But with legal authority they do not necessarily have the leadership influence.

Thirdly, the object of leadership is human while the object of management is the "resource system" composed of many elements such as human, financial, material, time and information. The so-called leadership is the process of the leader and those who follow the leader in a particular environment interaction. The management is the process of the manager of people, money, things, time, information and other elements together to achieve organizational goals. The element of management is a "resource system" made up of multiple elements. The "person" is the only element of leadership.

On the other hand, a good leader can also be a good manager through work-training because the relationship between leadership and management is closely linked and relatively independent. The leadership and management all help people to make decisions on the direction of the development of an enterprise and the establishment of an organization's relationship. On the other hand, the leadership and management assist people with all decision making on many problems and activities of the enterprise, thus striving to ensure the realization of the company’s goal. Businesses must continually address the needs of different elements such as markets, customers and employees, and must keep on calling as time and environment changes. Therefore, only the combination of leadership and management will produce satisfactory results.

For business leaders, they are not in pursuit of one certain ability, leadership or management, to exercise and develop, but the balanced development of both abilities.  Also, business leaders strive to develop the matching leadership and matching management for a suitable environment business, business development stages, and businesses status.

Scientific Management

How relevant is the study of scientific management for understanding the management and operations of modern enterprises?

Taylor's position in modern business management and organization is pivotal and this theory has certain research value. First of all, the core of scientific management principles of Taylor is standardization and institutionalized management. This is the foundation of management. Until today, it still has great practical significance. Secondly, in the era of information revolution and knowledge-based economy, we rethink Taylor's scientific management principles with updated concepts, and it is still a benefit to our business management.

1. the meaning of the "rules and procedures" of the enterprise

"Rules" and "processes" are issues that any organization must take care of, and enterprises use "profit-making" as the main purpose. No matter in the past, the present or the future, enterprises can not achieve success without the proper rules and procedures. Taylor's advocacy approach is "sum up experience and compile as a rule." On the one hand, enterprises should summarize the experience of workers and attach importance to practicality so as to avoid vague theories. On the other hand, compiled into rules, personal experience is no longer the principle of workers 'work, and companies should use the rules to unify the workers' activities into standardization.

2.  The meaning to "top workers"

Taylor believed that different workers have different characteristics and the degrees of work completed by different workers are not the same. So Taylor divided the workers into two categories, that is, first-class workers and second-class workers. To enable workers to realize their full potentials, workers must be properly chosen and trained to create "first-class" workers. As a business manager, he should pay attention to and observe carefully workers so as to master each person's characteristics, and formulate a reasonable development plan for them. This will not only enable workers to grow, but also bring benefits to the enterprises, reduce the phenomenon of waste and achieve a win-win situation.

Taylor believes training must be staffed with new methods of operation that have been scientifically analyzed and designed until workers become accustomed to working with science and law. Taylor also stressed that "all training should be driven by the front line" and the training should be oriented towards the whole rather than the part. By training those who are not fit for the job to suit the needs of the job or to rearrange them to other suitable jobs. So today's business should find talents, use of talents and retain talents. True leaders do not necessarily do everything in person. Second, enterprises must understand trust and decentralization. This will make better use of people who are better in some ways and put the right people in the right positions.

The fundamental purpose of scientific management is to seek high efficiency, and the highest efficiency of work is the basis for employers and employees to achieve common prosperity and to unify the higher wages and lower labor costs so as to expand the development of reproduction. An important way to achieve maximum work efficiency is to replace it with a scientific and standardized management approach. Taylor's scientific management has two major contributions: First, management should move toward science; second, the spiritual revolution between employers and employees. The former is a necessary condition for effective management and the latter is the necessary psychological management.
