下面为大家整理一篇 的essay代写范文 -- Boundaries that play a role in identity and culture,文章讲述每个人在世上都会有特殊的身份,并且有一些特殊的独特文化。

Boundaries that play a role in identity and culture

Every person will have a special identity as an existence in the world, and there are some special and unique cultures along with this identity. However, with the forming of those historical and regional borders, the identity and culture can sometimes become more elusive and ambiguous to understanding, which is one of the important functions of borders.

Firstly, historical and regional borders can influence one’s social identity. In the article The Changing Definition of African American, the author points out that “black American was transformed” (Berlin, 93). The author also explains that women and men in different geographical regions of American will show totally different attitude towards their social identity whether they are African Americans or not. For example, Jamaican-Americans reject the identity based on the reason that they have never been to the region of African (Berlin, 94). Apparently, the regional borders influence human identity. Besides the influence of regional borders, historical borders also influence one’s social identity, which left a vivid impression on me due to my personal experiences in Hubei Province of China. In Hubei province, there are many historic relics of the historical kingdom of Chu, which proved that this province was the place of the kingdom of Chu, thus people from Hubei province may sometimes call themselves the sons or daughters of the Kingdom Chu; however, the Sichuang province in China has been proved to be the place where the king of Shu has reigned, thus people in Sichuang province would sometimes call themselves the descendants of the Kingdom of Shu. Despite the fact that people whether in Hubei province or in Sichuang Proivince are all Chinese people, however, they will have a different identity for themselves in their mind due to historical borders.

Secondly, borders can also have an influence on shaping different cultures. For example, in the article The Changing Definition of African American, the author devoted himself to the study of the history of African American, he realized that due to the influence of “the American civil war and the emancipation movement, the newcomers of American experienced together the betrayal of the reconstruction, the ordeal of disfranchisement and segregation, and the pervasive, omnipresent discrimination, along with the heroic and ultimately triumphant struggle against second-class citizenship”, which reminded men and women “a shared past”, and “it also integrated black people’s history into an American story (Berlin, 97), which means that the black people and the native American white has experienced the same historical events, which makes them share something similar; however, they have different understanding of the same events, for example, the white thought it is an “inevitable progress”, while the black people realized the “racial inequality” ((Berlin, 98). The different understanding of the same event for the black people and the Americans proves that historical borders can obviously result in different cultural background.

More importantly, borders can further influence language. As analyzed in the article If Black English Isn’t a Language, Then Tell Me, What Is? , the author James Baldwin believes that language has many functions, and it can be a reflection the reality and the living circumstances, or a kind of political instrument (Baldwin, 153). He took an example that “the range of accent in a small island makes English coherent to the whole England but totally incomprehensive to anyone else” ((Baldwin, 153), this example proved that people in different parts speak different language and these regional borders also influence the spread of language. Considering the development of English, it is quite clear that there are many French words in English, which also proves the functions of historical borders to certain language.

With this facts enumerated above, it is quite natural for us to draw a conclusion that historical and regional borders can influence the social identity of different communities, further more, these borders can also function well in shaping different cultures and developing different languages.
