The role of imagination in children's identity formation

Increasing are the examples of great achievements made by some outstanding men at home and abroad and more and more are the findings by specialized experts and researchers that put extremely high premiums on the importance of imagination toward each and every one of us in the whole world. There is no doubt that it is now an inevitable trend to stress on the cultivation of imagination directly from the childhood of a person so that he/she can benefit a lot from being endowed with imagination at the first place when they are young. Therefore in the following I will elaborately discuss on the roles imagination play in the formation of children’s identity from my own point of view, during which some useful quotes will be adopted from Alison Gopnik’s “Possible Worlds” and Adam Gopnik’s “Bumping into Mr. Ravioli” at the same time.

First and foremost comes that imagination is important for the forming of correct attitude that the children will keep toward knowledge. As is known to us, imagination matters more than knowledge in a way or another in that it can summarize everything in the world so as to promote the progress of the whole world sooner or later. Or maybe we can put it another way that imagination can be regarded as the source of knowledge progress. While on the other hand, the knowledge that is obtained by a certain person will always tend to be limited no matter how hardworking the learner has learned or how long he has insisted in the process of pursuing, although the knowledge itself is undoubtedly endless and it is really difficult for anyone to explore it deeply and radically.

Adam Gopnik explores that Olivia is curious about the lifestyles of modern New Yorkers and want to know the reason in the passage “Why are New Yorkers always bumping into Charlie Ravioli and grabbing lunch, instead of sitting down with him and exchanging intimacies, as friends should, as people do in Paris and Rome? ”(156) The idea that imagination can contribute to the knowledge has also been stated by Alison Gopnik in that “But the new ideas I’ll outline show that exactly the same abilities that let children learn into existence—and to imagine alternative worlds that may never exist at all.”(164) Thus the importance of imagination in this point is that it can unconsciously force the people realize that their current knowledge is far more than enough and there is still a long way for them to go in the improvement of their own knowledge. Detailed speaking, imagination makes people get access to a cruel fact that they have only a superficial understanding of many things which they initially take for granted that they have mastered well enough and which even can be regarded as one of their strengths. In this way imagination can be viewed as a constant stimulus to urge the people to develop a correct attitude toward their own knowledge so that they can further carry out the mission to continue pursuing their unknown knowledge step by step to broaden their horizon gradually. If it is for children, it seems to be more significant in that it will influence them in their later long period of life.

With imagination can be seemed as a constant stimulus to urge the children to develop a correct attitude toward their own knowledge at present mentioned at length in the above, what comes next at the list is that imagination is indispensable for the formation of a sound and healthy personality for the children to a large degree. We can imagine the situation where there are two children included, one with imagination while the other without imagination, when something happens around, the one with imagination will naturally have a lot of ideas as to what has occurred just now and then they will accordingly take action to testify their guesses before in order to get the true answer in the end. While for another, the one without imagination just have no thoughts as to what has happened just now, what they think is that no matter what it is, it has just happened and he himself can make no difference even if he pay attention and efforts on it to totally understand it. Thus, the one without imagination will take an irresponsible position as if it is simply none of his business and why he bothers to clarify on it. In the long run, we can naturally draw a conclusion that the children without imagination will tend to be more and more inactive in the daily activities with others, leading to their being dull or part of closing themselves from the outer world. Usually such a group of people will tend to have an abnormal and unhealthy interpersonal relationship with others in the long term.

The relationship of imagination with socialization is also be stated in “Bumping into Mr. Ravioli” in that it refers to that “She has a day, and into this day she has introduced the figure of Charlie Ravioli—in order, it dawned on us, to insist that she does have days, because she is too harried to share them, that she does have an independent social life, by virtue of being too busy to have one.”(154) What is mentioned by Alison Gopnik is that “In fact, learning language gives children a whole powerful new way to imagine”(169), from which we can as well infer the relationship of imagination and socialization. So the significance of imagination on this case is that imagination can be seen as an indispensable element for the formation of a sound and healthy personality for the children themselves even from they are still very young. It is common sense that no people can live without imagination as if human beings have no imagination, then it is impossible that they can land on the moon consequently; if human beings have no imagination toward Utopia, then they will not have the motivation to pursue social progress for the sake of all human beings right now and for the generations to come in the future. That is to say, what imagination to human beings is what wings to birds, from which we can see the essentiality of imagination to the formation of children’s identity. As far as I am concerned, how big your imagination is, how much you can achieve in the end as imagination can lead you on the way to gain achievements nonstop, as can be justified by the truth that you will step into the stage to struggle for your life earlier than others when others are still pacing up and down as to what to do for the time being.

Last but not the least comes that imagination is conducive to the enrichment for your life in a way or another as it can from time to time bring fun and interest to our life with the help of it. As Adam Gopnik says Olivia creates an imaginary figure to entertain herself: “Most under-sevens (sixty-three percent, to be scientific) have an invisible friend, and children create their imaginary playmates not out of trauma but out of a serene sense of the possibilities of fiction—sometimes as figures of pure fantasy, sometimes, as Olivia had done, as observations of grown-up manners, assembled in tranquility and given a name.”(155) Also Alison Gopnik mentions that “The evolutionary answer is that counterfactuals let us change the future”(165) also puts forward that imagination can make life more colorful in a way or another.

Luckily, we are born with a certain extent of imagination in the beginning, which means each and every one of us has the ability to imagine. However, the imagination of some people will develop in a surprisingly speed so that they can be really creative and active in whatever aspects in the end. While others who frequently adopt a passive attitude to the life will make their imagination decrease bit by bit and even they will lose it finally as it is not being taken advantage of for a rather long period of time. Therefor it is a must for us to use our own imagination from time to time to add fun and interest to our life so that it can be a meaningful and colorful one compared with those that don’t apply imagination that often or never apply at all.

Then in what way can imagination be applied to be put to the full play in adding color to our life? From my own perspective, to rack our brains in a high frequency whenever and wherever we are confronted with whatever thing in our daily life right away and successively figure out some feasible ways to deal with it, contributing to the completion of it at last with might and main. Saying has it that “a busy life that is full of challenges is one that is as well meaningful and enriched in itself and shall be cherished and pursued by ”. Taking the convenience of human beings nowadays for an example: we can easily find that human beings under current times are guaranteed with many basic warfare projects and their happy index has also risen constantly year by year thanks to the continuous development of the economics and technologies over the global level due to the unexpected springing up of numerous inventions in a fast speed from a great majority of people under the motivation of imagination. By this we can put it another way that imagination is an indispensable prerequisite for the coming up of inventions in whatever way.

To sum up, the roles imagination play in the formation of children’s identity can be listed as follows: it can be viewed as a constant stimulus to urge the children to develop a correct attitude toward their own knowledge at present so that they can further carry out the mission to continue pursuing their unknown knowledge step by step to broaden their horizon gradually and it will bring lifelong benefits to them in the rest of their life; it can be seen as an indispensable element for the formation of a sound and healthy personality for the children themselves which is critical for the later socialization no matter they are in the school for study or in the society for work; it is conducive to the enrichment for children’s life in a way or another as it can from time to time bring fun and interest to their life as most part of their life calls for the participation and joint efforts of imagination. At the final last of this essay, I just want to express my sincere hopes and heartfelt gratitude that all the children can develop and use their own imagination well enough to bring lifelong benefits to themselves and in the meanwhile set examples for the generations to come so as to benefit them too.
