“The Story of The Stuff” is an educational short video hosted by Annie Leonard. Focusing on the question “where are the stuff going”, Annie introduces audience where goods or stuff around us come from and how the stuff influence various aspects of the world and the lives of human beings. According to Annie’s introduction, there are five important stages in” the chain of the stuff”. The first stage is natural resources exploitation to provide raw material of the stuff. The second stage is about the stuff processing and production. During this stage, lots of toxics would impair the health of human beings. The third and fourth stages are about product sales and purchasing.  And the last stage is about how the stuff become the useless garbage and some recycling methods. When Annie tells the story of the stuff, she puts forwards a lot of global problems like pollution, overdevelopment of natural resources, unbalanced regional economic development and garbage recycling and so on. According to Annie, to some extent the world is now driven by the interests of corporations, and human beings are controlled by the consuming behaviors. Therefore, people should pay more attention to these problems and try to make the world cleaner with sustainable development.

Analysis

The main theme of the video is how to achieve a sustainable development of the modern world. The reason why we watch the video is to realize the current global problems like pollution and over production we are faced with and the measures we should take to deal with them. The five stages Annie introduces have connection to sustainability, because the current five stages did not achieve a sustainable development of the world. On the contrary, they have resulted in a lot of global problems and would make things worse. I have also noticed some bias in the video, for example, the bias towards the people from the third world. It is true that people from the third world countries have to be the cheap labor during the stuff production, but we could not blame them for that. In my opinion, being as the cheap workers in factories would still offer them opportunities to get knowledge and skill, making them have opportunity to get stronger in the future. All in all, it is important to learn about “The Story of Stuff”, because this video broadens our horizons towards the world and raise our awareness towards the current global problems.

Response

I think the video is informative and educational. After watching it, I have learned how the stuff around us come from and in what ways they are produced and processed. Annie introduces lots of interesting things in the video, and I was really interested in the “nation of consumers” concept raised by Annie. According to Annie, when a country suffer from disasters or difficulties, government would more likely to encourage people to go shopping. The more stuff we buy, the more the nation would benefits from the economic growth. However, I also have some confusion about it. At the end of the video, Annie mentions that the efficiency of garbage recycling is pretty low. But I think recycling technology has improved a lot these days, so why didn’t such technology take effect? After I watched the video once more, I found that the information like the consuming behaviors of the world would be helpful for me. Since human beings are always encouraged to go shopping, the stuff became too much to be recycle. Therefore, I would apply moderate consuming to my life to live more sustainably. All in all, there are three adjectives I would use to describe the video: educational, informative and eco-friendly, because this video really helps me a lot to learn about the world and makes me realize the importance of environment protection.
