Colleges are usually regarded as ivory towers, which are largely isolated from hard truth of society. Every year hundreds and thousands of freshmen, who hold different expectations about the following four years, enrol in colleges in the US as well as in other countries. They learn general and professional knowledge, languages and communication, interpersonal skills and manners. The same syllabus surely will have different impacts on each individual student. Not only because of the different degrees of participation in extracurricular activities, but also because it is the period of character building. I believe the knowledge and skills I acquire throughout my college studying experience will be of great help in discovering my interest and potential, prepare me for career development upon graduation, and remain as invaluable assets throughout my life.

It is true that overseas study experience will provide me with the opportunity to engage in different academic environment, sharpen professional skills, and find my personal fields of interest.What I would expect to learn from my college experience is first and foremost a solid knowledge base. This includes general knowledge such as writing techniques, subject specific knowledge as well as knowledge on my personal interests. Providing access to knowledge should always be the prime focus for colleges. Firstly, academic knowledge and practical knowledge are developed for different stages of life. In order to deliver on promise to facilitate students’ growth, colleges should not solely provide students with knowledge that concerns employers so as to equip students with enough knowledge to deploy. Secondly, colleges stand as an entrance into a deep understanding of students themselves. Colleges, with their welcoming and encouraging atmosphere can always expose students to as many chances and challenges as possible. That is the reason why many full-time employees find every opportunity to further their study in campuses. Higher education makes it possible for a person to aim higher than average, to make wiser choice facing an array of opportunities and to be better equipped with knowledge and skills for a sustainable career growth. College education should undoubtedly support the growth of an independent souls and help students build their characters. The existence of universities makes it possible to expose students to a wide range of knowledge and that is of crucial importance to their all-round development. With invaluable knowledge to draw on, students can discover their true calling and find the career for their lives. Also, brain power is an important measurement for a person’s success. Therefore, in order to become competitive on labour market in future, I would grasp the opportunity to actively explore knowledge that interests me. This practice can help stimulate my capacity to the most productive level and become qualified for future career.

Even though as an oversea student language barrier is the primary obstacle, I believe I would become more confident in language and communication skills through the college years. Living and studying in a foreign culture without the protection of parents and relatives was an overwhelming challenge at first. I was frustrated and lost focus for quite a while. Indeed, language learning is such a rewarding exercise. I used to have high expectation for myself but the awkwardness and embarrassment I felt in tutorials when classmates heatedly discuss questions posed by tutors made me have a sense of self-consciousness. But failure is only failure unless you learn from it. I learnt first-hand that if you fail to prepare yourself for a new challenge, then you may prepare to fail. From that point on, I learnt the importance of holding a modest and growing mindset in learning language. The benefits do not limit in self-improvement in language skills, resilience, and determination, but learners can also improve the interpersonal skill and gain friendships through the learning process. I had made several close friends during my language studying in college and we often use our spare time to participate extracurricular activities. We reach to each other regularly and share our interest experiences in not only language learning but also in study and life. I am very glad to have such friendship which can always bring me positive influence. Language learning surely is an unforgettable experience for me and probably I will learn my second foreign language in the near future. Every challenge and failure provides me with an opportunity to stay out of my comfort zone and explore more possibilities to grow. The change of my mindset has a fundamental impact on my perception of external support that I had taken for granted and I grew to become a person who is responsible for his own decisions and success.

Apart from academic and practical knowledge and skills, I also expect to learn manners of dealing with people thought studying and social experience in campus. Generally speaking, to blend in the American and Western culture, which sometimes proves to be harder than achieving distinctions in academic performance, together with the language confusion in communication are the biggest obstacles for me studying in the United States at first. To study and live in a totally different culture is never a piece of cake for me. The basic necessities of life can become a major concern and has everything to do with the quality of my life. The number one problem facing me is where to live and it is always easier said than done. I learned to negotiate with the rental agency to argue for a desirable room at a reasonable price; and I had to stand out for my own interests such as filling in complaint forms to avoid any violation of my rights. With the passage time I faced different situations where everyday problems used to be obstacles that are unable for me to overcome. Be in a foreign environment, I feel the exposure to various challenges from every aspect of life such as transport issues and accommodation problems. It was really frustrating during the first few months. However, these are great chances to test my ability to adapt to new challenges and these lessons can be learned no other way. I am glad to see myself succeeding in cope with difficulties efficiently later on. For many Chinese students to study overseas means to get gilded, to polish personal profile, and make their resumes more appealing. However, the truth is that this studying experience does not only contain glamourous moments such as graduation ceremony, in fact, a considerable amount of time is spent in library researching course materials, in discussing group assignments with group members, and in preparing for exams. But what is heartening is that I do achieve a lot, improve a lot, and become more mature during this precious period of development especially when compared to the younger version of me years ago.

Last but not least, I expect to see my growth in both professional and emotional, intelligent and mental aspects. Living without the immediate support from families, I can sometimes easily feel powerlessness and vulnerable to emotional instability, especially during the initial period of time. As with the adaptive phase coming to a close, I can feel the increasing level of confidence in my heart. My schedule and timetable became more colorful and fulfilling and I can truly enjoy life at university without any discomfort I used to felt. In addition to that, the emotional expense of studying abroad is not a trivial concern. Loneliness used to be my frequent guest. Timidity cost me various opportunities to make more local friends and to experience more meaningful activities. I have tried hard to change the adverse situation by actively starting conversations with people and doing extensive reading to equip my mind with informative ideas and thoughts so as to make the exchange of opinions more constructive. Although it was difficult at first and failures were always waiting next door, I never gave up trying. I learn how to give myself emotional first aid when needed and my friends like to consult my opinions on different things. All these positive changes are those I did not foresee during my depressed phase of adaption. It is no exaggeration to say that these years’ of study abroad have rebuild my character to become more resilient, dependable, and independent-minded. Every success comes from a period of diligent preparation and the past few years saw my heartening growth in professional knowledge as well as mentality. On retrospect, I find my position on the stage of campus life later with the ending of my adaptive phase, and waltz boldly to the center has proved to be a very rewarding and worthwhile challenge to take. I feel that this is not my destination of study, it should be a new beginning at a higher level instead. I actually feel proud to succeed in adapting myself to life at American university. This unique experience cannot be easily replicated elsewhere and would have profound influence in the building of my characters.

In conclusion, studying in college provides me with a unique and meaningful opportunity to discover where my interests lie. Even though academic achievements plays a significant part during these four-year period, I believe that college opens a more colourful world to me with congenial friends and insightful professors. More importantly, what I surely can gain from this learning experience also includes the establishment of my basic world view and thorough understanding of my own characters. All these perspectives and constructive attitudes will help set the tone of my life trajectory.
