The book entitled The Art Of Social Media by Guy Kawasaki and Peg Fitzpatrick was published by Penguin Group in 2014. In the book, there is a detailed discussion and useful tips of social media with a purpose to make a full use of social media. Overall, I think it is a rather useful book to help people better understand social media and provide some very effective tips in using it.

 

There are 12 chapters in this book ranging from the most basic part of social media, and the most sophisticated use of social media. In the first chapter, there is an explanation of importance of profile page of social media. Profile is to “explain who you are” (Kawasaki, & Fitzpatrick, 2014, p.100). The second chapter “How To Feed The Content Monster”, it is about how to enrich the content of social media. In the third chapter “ How To Perfect Your Posts”，there are some detailed and specific lists of what the quality of a good and perfect posts should have and the importance of perfecting posts. The foundation of social media is that people tend to reshare “good stuff” (Kawasaki, & Fitzpatrick, 2014, p.407). In the fourth chapter entitled “How To Respond To Comments”, Guy Kawasaki and Peg Fitzpatrick informs the readers of some practical tips，such as the right tools and learning about the audience well, and son on. The fifth chapter “How To Integrate Social Media And Blogging” and in the eighth chapter “ How To Run Google And Hangouts On Air” provides some very technical tips for the operations. The sixth chapter “how to get more followers” is quite concise by just giving two suggestions “share good stuff” and “jump on new platforms” (Kawasaki, & Fitzpatrick, 2014, p.879). The seventh chapter “How To Socialize Events” is intended to provide very specific suggestions to organizations in the use of social media. At last, there is a lot of discussion to perfect the use of social media in the ninth chapter “how to rock a twitter chat”, the tenth chapter “how to avoid looking clueless”, the eleventh chapter “how to optimize for individual platforms” and the twelfth chapter “how to put everything together”.  

 

There is a lot of vivid expressions in this book. For example, instead of saying enriching and finding enough content of social media directly, the authors use “feed the content monster” in a metaphorical manner. It makes the book more interesting. Then, there are steps of how to establishing a good profile page with each steps marked by alphabetical numbers. Thus, because of there are a lot of alphabetical numbers used to label different steps of perfecting social media across the boundaries of different chapters, it is more easy to find the clues of proper tips for social media usage. Thus, this book is less confusing for people to use it as a practical guide. But the sixth chapter “How To Get More Followers” is a little bit overlapping with the content in the third chapter “ How To Perfect Your Posts”. But it also shows that there is some cohesiveness and cohesion between the different chapters in those works, which supports its work better. A careful examination of the order of chapters reveals that there is a gradual intensifying of the complexity of discussion.
