Broadcasting is essential to contemporary Australian culture

Radio broadcasting is one of the most important media for people to acquire information and news. Through the wireless transmission, audience could hear various kinds of programs broadcasted from radio stations. No matter at home or in cars, audience could hear beautiful music, social news, weather forecast, attractive stories or even talk shows from radios. However, radio plays different roles in different countries and areas. For example, in some developing countries like some African countries, radio may become African people’s only media to acquire news and information or a means for entertainment. While in some developed countries, radio is only an alternative way for people to get information. Television, newspaper, internet and intelligent mobile phone are all the competitors of radio which could not only deliver information through voice but also through text, pictures and video. Today, Australian radio industry is now faced with such problems and challenges—more and more audience would more likely to choose the new emerging media like Internet, apps of mobile phones and internet social network sites like Facebook, Twitter and so on. Though Australia’s radio is threatened by new emerging media and the globalization of media, radio still plays a significant role for contemporary Australian cultures in 2015 especially in fields of youth-based culture development, new living behaviors based on digital technology and globalized attitudes towards the world. Therefore, this essay explores how radio impacts on contemporary Australian cultures in 2015 and to what extent it plays a role in Australian people’s lives.

First of all, radio still plays a significant role for the development of Australian youth-based culture. Taking Triple J for an instance, Triple J is a radio division of the Australian Broadcasting Corporation. Focusing on the audience including teenagers and young people of twenties, Triple J now becomes a hub of Australian youth-based culture. According to its official website, Triple J now has over 18 programs including Matt & Alex, Morning with Zan, Lunch with Lewi, Hack, Home & Hosed, Hip Hop Show, Short. Fast. Loud, House Party and so on. (“Triple J”) All the programs are especially designed to cater to young people’s interest and tastes. For example, Home and Hosed is a live radio broadcasting program released from 9 p.m. to 12 p.m., every Monday to Thursday of a week in Triple J. Featured by new Australian music, this program attracts a great number of Australia local music creators, producers, and singers to show their independent music works to the audience and they also win more and more recognition and popularity from the public. According to the blog of Home and Hosed posted by Dom, when Dom introduced the Australian local band The Streets of Adelaide, he said “you still get a fascinating insight into life and culture in the City of Churches.”(Alessio,1) From Dom’s view, we could learn that how Triple J is committed to promoting Australian local music and culture. As a local radio program, Home and Hosed tries its best to introduce new local independent music band to its audience and believe every local music band or producer would be an identity card of their local culture, making Australian youth-based culture known to more people around the country and the world.

Also, ABC Triple J celebrated its 30th anniversary in 2015, which promotes Australian independent youth-based culture to a new level especially in terms of self-produced music, original music live show, free music share and so on. Founded in 1975, Triple J radio station was initially known as Double J radio station as a division of Australian Broadcasting Corporation. Since it founded, the radio station is committed to bringing best local music to the Australian people. According to the statement of Triple J 30th Anniversary official website, from the 1975, “the ABC’s radio station 2JJ, has grabbed 5.4 per cent of the local audience after two months’ operation.” For the hottest program Double-J Rock in the 1980s, it “captured 17 per cent of the 18-24 age group.” (1) Today, Triple J extends its program types and functions. For example, in 2015, Triple J hosted live music show every week on its program called Live At The Wireless. At the end of 2015, a program called Like A Version came back to Triple J. In this program, music bands or musicians would come to the radio studio with their instrument and then be asked to have a live music show by the audience. Such program provides opportunities for musicians and bands to closely interact with their fans and audience. The reason why Triple J newly released more such live show program is that it encourages original music creation by the new generation and hope it could be a comprehensive platform to connect Australian audience and musicians. Moreover, Triple J also provides a platform to share free original music. Not only the music from its live show program, but also musicians from all over the world could contribute their music works to the radio station to share them to the audience both in Australia and around the globe. Based on the support of Triple J, Australia becomes a paradise for original music producers, making original music creation and share becomes a culture of the country.

In addition to the music programs and music live shows, Triple J also hosted large-scale music events including Hottest 100 2015, The J Awards 2015, Heywire Competition, Beat The Drum Concert and Splendour In The Grass 2015 and so on. Initially, these music events hosted by Triple J was only a self-made activities to conclude annual Australian music development. However, today, especially in 2015, some of the events became worldwide music events which attracted a great number of world-class musicians and singers from all over the world and a national carnival celebrated by all the Australian people. For example, the Triple J’s Hottest 100 2015 is an event that involves 27 countries around the globe to encourage audience vote for their favorite songs released in 2015. Singers like Taylor Swift from America, Justin Bieber from Canada and some independent musicians like Matt Okine, Jack Garatt all participate in the events. The result of the 2015 poll will be released on air on Australia Day 2016, which makes the events become more significant to Australian people’s lives and gradually develop into a traditional event in Australian culture. (Hunt, 1) Different from Hottest 100 2015 event, Beat The Drum Concert is an event which focuses more on the alternative music and local community music activity. According to Kathy McCabe in her news article, a great number of young musicians are encouraged by Triple J radio. They listened to Triple J when they were young and then “They grew up listening to Triple J, dreaming of the day when one of their songs just might make it onto the radio.” (1) Preatures is one of the music bands which was greatly influenced by Triple J. In Kathy’s article, members of Preatures band remembered how they inspired by Triple J’s music and programs and how their music was published through the radio. In other world, in the past few years, Triple J radio is like a school that accompanies the young people’s growing and provides information and knowledge to the young people. But today, Triple J radio is a stage that offers opportunities for its graduates to show their music works. Therefore, Triple J is not only a radio, but also a school or stage that influences today’s development of young people, making them keep their memory of their youth time as well as have the opportunity to realize their music dream.

Secondly, In addition to the influence on youth-based culture, radio in Australia also has significant influence on people’s living behaviors in 2015. Currently, besides the traditional way for radio broadcasting, Australian radio also adopts new digital technology to attract more audience. For example, in order to enhance the listening experience for the audience, ABC Radio develops its ABC Radio app and online Radio station, making audience could listen to any radio programs through their mobile phones and personal computers. Also, ABC radio joined Twitter and Facebook to connect more audience online. In addition to traditional audio programs, ABC radio meanwhile develops a lot of video programs, text-based news as well as photo-based news. Taking Triple J for instance, all its audio programs are uploaded on its official websites so as to make audience from all over the world to hear their programs through Internet. Based on this technology, radio is no longer a news broadcasting means which could only provide services for the local community. Audience from all over the world could hear its programs everywhere at anytime, which great influences people’s living behaviors and then develops a new trend for Australian culture—audience would be gradually accustomed to opening their computers or mobile phones to listen to their favorite programs. Meanwhile, they would become pickier to the radio programs. If they find the programs are not interesting enough, they would stop listening immediately and then try to find something more interesting through the internet. In order to grab their audience through the Internet, Triple J also developed some video programs online and photo gallery in its official website. The video programs could be the film of the stories happened in the radio studio, the live shows of the musicians or the recording of the concerts or activities. Therefore, due to the new technology in their radio programs, more and more Australian people have changed their habits and living behaviors these years.

Last, but not least, though Australian radio is located in Australia, the news it broadcasts becomes more and more international. As a result, radio not only makes Australian people own the globalized attitudes and views towards the world but also becomes an access for people all over the world to learn more about Australia. For example, in the Hottest 100 2015, Taylor Swift and Justin Bieber from the North America are all among the most popular singers candidates, which means that Triple J is always open for the cultures from the United States, Canada and even some European countries or Asian countries. For other radio program of Australia Broadcasting Corporation, like Just In program, it has an independent news column for the world news. From this column, news from the world are actively released by Australian radios, making Australian people keep pace with the changes and development of the outside world. For example, in 2015, Australia radio continuously paid attention to the world peace and broadcasted news including Paris terrorism attack and North Korea’s developing situation. On the one hand, Australia radio provides local people with a wider horizon of the world with its global news broadcasting. On the other hand, Australia radio becomes an access for the world to learn more about the Australian people and culture of Australia. For example, through the Internet, more and more foreigners would learn the music of Australian musicians through Triple J. The program of Triple J like Unearthed is specialized to discover new Australian music and then deliver them to the worldwide audience. (“Triple J”) Therefore, Australian radio is still important for the Australian people to learn the outside world as well as for the world to learn more about this country.

In conclusion, according to the analysis focused on programs of Australian Broadcasting Corporation above, a conclusion could be drawn that radio is still significant to contemporary Australian cultures in 2015. It helps to promote the youth-based culture and create a lot of independent music works and groups. Also, by integrating new digital technology, radio could be accessed by more people through mobile phones and Internet. Last, but not least, with great attention to the globalized news and information, radio makes Australian people more open-minded with broader attitudes towards the changes and development of the world. In the future, radio would still be important to the development of Australian culture. Though as a traditional media, radio would be faced with increasing challenges from new emerging media, it would adjust itself to cater to the tastes of modern people and then plays an essential role in Australian’s lives.
