Other ways to improve editing

During the editing process, my group and I have been faced with kinds of difficulties and challenges including English grammar, critical thinking and logical analysis in argumentative essay writing. After some discussion with our group members and independent analysis by myself, the editing of the paragraph achieves a good performance at last and I have learned a lot from this editing practice.

First of all, since English is not my first language, grammar correcting becomes a great challenge for me. So I have to work really hard to find out the grammar errors in the essay. For example, the use of plural and singular verbs is really hard to distinguish as “Amity”, “Erudite”, “Dauntless”, “Candor”, and “Abnegation” are five abstract nouns in the novel, which could either represents certain characters or specific groups of people. After careful thinking, I determine that in the paragraph, “Amity”, “Erudite”, “Dauntless”, “Candor” and “Abnegation” should be used as singular noun to represent specific kind of people. So I revise the plural from of the verbs in the paragraph.

Meanwhile, during the editing process, my group also struggled with word choice. Every one of us tried our best to use the most suitable words to ensure a refined article, but different people have different ideas. For example, I insisted that words like “I think” or “I found” should not be used in a formal essay, while other group members thought these words could be used there so as to express writer’s own opinion. Finally, we made an agreement—to revise these words in introduction and conclusion parts while remain some of them in the body paragraphs.

Secondly, critical thinking is also important in argumentative writing, so I pay great attention to make this paragraph more persuasive with clear thesis and strong argument. For example, I believe a good topic sentence with clear thesis would greatly impress upon readers the opinion of this essay, so I add “Amity represents the most important trait—the love, which exceeds other characters in terms of humanity and morality” at the beginning of the paragraph. Also, to strengthen the argument, I use quotation and citation of the book as evidence to prove the opinion of the essay, making the argument more concrete and vivid.

Last, but not least, logical thinking is also important in essay editing. To make the whole paragraph more logical and reliable, I add thesis statement and concluding remarks so as to ensure structure and content of the essay more integrated and informative.

In conclusion, after this editing practice, I have improved a lot in English grammar, critical thinking and logical thinking in argumentative writing. I believe I would adopt these skills to my writing works in the future.
